US Promises to Keep Sanctions on Russia
The US has promised to keep sanctions on Russia in place until a deal is made to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. This was announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Since 2023, the US has imposed several rounds of sanctions on Russia to stop its invasion of Ukraine. These restrictions have affected banks, the oil and gas industry, and the delivery of goods that can be used for both civilian and military purposes.
Rubio said that lifting these sanctions would be part of any peace process between the two countries. He suggested that “concessions” would need to be made by all parties involved to bring an end to the conflict.
The EU has also imposed sanctions on Russia. Rubio assured European colleagues in a phone call that these sanctions would not be lifted until a settlement could be reached.
A spokesperson for the State Department said that the countries agreed to stay in close contact as they work towards a “durable end” to the conflict in Ukraine.
However, it is still unclear what role European nations will play in the negotiations with Russia. A previous statement suggested that Europe would not be directly involved in the talks but its interests would be considered.
