**Israel Admits Unreported Strike in Gaza, Killing at Least One Palestinian**
The Israeli military has confirmed that it conducted an unreported strike in the al-Mawasi region of southern Gaza, resulting in the death of at least one Palestinian and injuring 30 others. The strike occurred on Sunday, just hours after 31 Palestinians died in a separate incident near a new aid distribution center in Rafah.
**Israel’s Admission Comes After BBC Investigation**
BBC Verify reviewed footage that appeared to show an attack near the aid distribution center, but actually showed a separate attack in the nearby Khan Younis. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) initially did not report the strike, but admitted to it after being approached by BBC Verify. They claimed that the incident was caused by “technical errors and operational mistakes,” but provided no evidence to support these claims.
**Israel’s Record of Admitting Errors**
The IDF rarely admits to making such errors. According to BBC Verify’s analysis, there have been only four instances where the IDF admitted to making an “error”, “technical”, or “operational error” relating to the Gaza war since it began. This admission is significant, as it suggests that the IDF may be hiding more information about its actions in Gaza.
**The Human Cost**
The strike struck an area where some Palestinians who had fled their homes were sheltering. UN estimates that 90% of the 2.1 million residents of the Gaza Strip have been forced from their homes. The footage showed bloodied bodies and women and children screaming as they watched the injured being carried away.
**Dispute Over Footage**
The footage was at the center of a dispute between the BBC and the White House. The White House Press Office incorrectly claimed that the BBC had retracted its coverage of the aid center killings, but the BBC denied this and stated that it stood by its journalism.
**Background to the Conflict**
Israel launched a campaign in Gaza as a response to Hamas’ cross-border attack, which resulted in approximately 1,200 people dying and 251 being taken hostage. According to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, at least 54,607 Palestinians have died in Gaza since then.
