**Ukrainian Refugees in UK to Get Visa Extensions**

Around 300 Ukrainian refugees will soon be able to extend their stay in the UK. This is because of a government announcement that allows them to apply for a new visa extension scheme.

The Ukrainian Permission Extension (UPE) scheme will let these refugees stay in the UK for another 18 months. But they must apply within 28 days of their current visa expiring.

**Support from Swindon Council**

Swindon Borough Council is contacting known residents who may be eligible for the scheme to help them extend their stay. There are two groups affected: 172 people living in independent accommodation and 112 people still with hosts under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme.

The council’s Warm Welcome team has been helping Ukrainian arrivals since the war started. They have case workers who provide one-to-one support to help these refugees transition into life in Swindon.

**Visa Extension Process**

To apply, refugees must do so within 28 days of their current visa expiring. If they are still living with hosts under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme, ‘Thank You’ payments will continue when their visas are extended. However, this payment will be reduced from £500 to £350 in April 2025.

**Council’s Warm Welcome Team**

Councillor Jim Grant said: “The Warm Welcome team provides a comprehensive support service for refugees and asylum seekers. They help individuals and families navigate services and systems, offering information, advice, and emotional support.” He thanked everyone involved in this important work, including host families who have shown huge hearts in welcoming people from all over the world.
