**Russian Attacks on Ukraine: 5 Dead, 29 Injured in Past Day**
In the lead-up to expected peace talks in Istanbul, Russian attacks on Ukraine have left at least five people dead and 29 others injured over the past day. Regional authorities reported these devastating numbers on May 15.
**Drone Strikes Foiled by Ukrainian Forces**
Ukrainian forces demonstrated their resilience by downing 62 out of the 100 Shahed-type attack drones launched by Russia overnight, according to the Air Force. Additionally, 29 more drones disappeared from radar without causing any damage. These decoy drones are often launched alongside real ones to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defense.
**Industrial Site Hit in Sumy**
A Russian missile strike on an industrial site in the city of Sumy resulted in three deaths and six injuries, local authorities confirmed. The attacks also targeted other areas across the country, including the Bilopillia community, where a woman and a man were injured after being hit by guided aerial bombs.
**Kharkiv Oblast Suffers Casualties**
Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported that a 60-year-old man was killed in a Russian attack on Kupiansk. Two men, aged 75 and 86, suffered injuries as a result of Russia’s shelling near the village of Kozacha Lopan.
**Donetsk Oblast Hit**
In Donetsk Oblast, one person was killed in Torske, while seven others were injured over the past day, according to Governor Vadym Filashkin. Russian forces targeted 35 settlements in Kherson Oblast, injuring nine people, reported Governor Oleksandr Prokudin.
**Russia Strikes Dnipropetrovsk Oblast**
Russian attacks also hit Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, where a 67-year-old woman was injured, and a building sustained damage. Ukrainian forces carried out an operation in Russia’s Smolensk Oblast to disrupt arms shipments to Russian forces stationed at Ukraine’s northeastern border.
**Peace Talks Loom on the Horizon**
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte believes there is a window of opportunity for peace talks this week, which could lead to a better resolution in Ukraine. However, Russian actions and statements have been met with skepticism by many international officials.
