“I know that the Georgian government had a motive to restrict my freedom. I do not exclude that there was great pressure from Russia, to create more problems,” Anton Chechin, a citizen of the Russian Federation accused of drug crimes, said at the trial.
He said he will continue to fight for his rights.
“All political prisoners should be released, like all unjustly accused. For 9 months I could not find a place to prove my innocence. I know that the Georgian government had a motive to restrict my freedom. I do not exclude that there was great pressure from Russia, to create more problems. The ruling party in Georgia is in a very unstable state, they decided to plant drugs on people, this is evidenced by the current situation, such as drug trafficking. This is also common in other countries, unfortunately in Georgia.
I did a lot of work from prison to prove not only my innocence, but also to punish those who committed this. I sent letters to embassies of 20 countries, to international missions, to journalists and to the Georgian Ombudsman’s Office, asking them to help me in the European Court of Human Rights. 2 complaints were filed against Georgia. If they convict me, I will continue the fight because my rights are being violated in prison. Several complaints were filed with the investigative body, which are not being investigated, and the reason is that it is headed by the prosecutor’s office, which is against me. I was speaking out against the pro-Russian government.
Now, Tedo Abramov, Giorgi Akhobadze have been released. Nika Katsia and I are in prison,” Chechin said.
According to him, the police’s actions during his arrest were illegal.
“Drugs were found illegally in my jacket pocket, I had no connection with drugs. The police used violence that was not necessary, but in fact they used it to intimidate me. The package that was taken from my pocket was not in my hands. ….
I saw that evil was destroying not only my country, but also other countries, one of them is Georgia. The political and social situation in which I was born posed a threat to the entire world. I could not stand by and watch what the Soviet Empire and Putin’s regime were doing. Evil was shedding rivers of blood all over the world. My duty was to protect people, to fight for Georgia against the occupation and for its independence… Good will surely prevail. Long live the independence of Georgia”, Chechin declared.
Anton Chechin was arrested on December 3, 2024. He is charged under Part 6 of Article 260 of the Criminal Code, which refers to the purchase, storage and possession of narcotic drugs in a particularly large amount and provides for a sentence of 8 to 20 years or life imprisonment.
