**EU Criticizes Georgia’s Decision to Close NATO and EU Information Center**
The European Union has spoken out against Georgia’s decision to close its NATO and EU Information Center. Anitta Hipper, the EU’s Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, expressed concern over the move, calling it a “further step in the wrong direction”.
According to Hipper, the Information Center had played an important role in promoting and educating the public about the benefits of EU and NATO integration. She noted that the decision to close the center coincides with other measures taken by the Georgian authorities to limit engagement with the EU.
**EU Imposes Sanctions**
The EU has already begun implementing measures in response to Georgia’s actions. Hipper stated that the EU will continue to apply sanctions, including downgraded political contacts and a halt in direct assistance to Georgian authorities. Additionally, visa-free travel for Georgian diplomats, officials, and their families holding diplomatic and official passports has been suspended.
**Supporting Civil Society**
Despite these measures, the EU remains committed to supporting civil society in Georgia. Hipper emphasized that the EU will continue to provide support to civil society organizations in the country, even as it maintains pressure on the Georgian government.
The closure of the NATO and EU Information Center is just one part of a broader trend of Georgia’s government limiting its engagement with the EU and NATO. The move has been met with concern from Brussels, which sees it as a step away from integration with Western institutions.
