Once again, it has become very clear that “Georgian Dream” has no one to shake hands with on the international stage – this letter would truly be laughable if it were not a tragedy and if it did not concern the European future of this country, – this is how one of the leaders of the “United National Movement,” Ana Tsitlidze, evaluates Mikheil Kavelashvili’s open letter addressed to the U.S. President, Donald Trump.
According to Ana Tsitlidze, in reality, this is a letter from Bidzina Ivanishvili to the U.S. President, Donald Trump.
“This once again confirms the complete collapse of ‘Georgian Dream’s’ foreign policy. It proves that, regardless of how ‘Georgian Dream’ misled its voters before the elections, promising that after Trump’s victory they would be able to normalize relations with the U.S., that Trump would support them, that there would be no sanctions, and so on – today it has once again become very clear that ‘Georgian Dream’ has no one to shake hands with internationally. As an anti-democratic, pro-Russian force, they will not be able to build any relations with the United States or with our international partners.
Especially when it comes to a supposed reset in relations with the U.S. – ‘Georgian Dream’ has had many opportunities to do this, including by following the roadmap that exists on Georgia’s path toward European integration, which implies fulfilling the obligations that Georgia has on the road to European development. That is why this letter would truly be laughable, if it were not a tragedy and if it did not concern the European future of this country.
Therefore, regardless of Bidzina Ivanishvili’s attempts, ‘Georgian Dream’ will inevitably face even harsher sanctions. I am convinced of this. Their position will become even more difficult internationally, and it will be even harder for them and their family members, because the path they are on is called betrayal of this country. No one can have good relations with an anti-democratic regime that betrays its own country in favor of Russia,” – said Tsitlidze.
For context, Mikheil Kavelashvili addressed an open letter to the U.S. President, Donald Trump, stating that the U.S. administration does not show proper attention toward Georgia, which, against the backdrop of full value alignment between the governments, causes surprise within Georgian society. According to Kavelashvili, he is personally ready to do everything possible to contribute to the Georgian government’s declared goal of restoring the strategic partnership between Georgia and the United States from scratch, based on a specific roadmap.
“It is noteworthy that during the first few months of your presidency, you established close relations with all of Georgia’s neighboring countries – you successfully facilitated a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, you are actively cooperating with the Turkish authorities, and you even restored partnership with Vladimir Putin. However, against this background, your administration says nothing about Georgia, which, as I have already mentioned, surprises Georgian society,” – Kavelashvili wrote in his open letter.
