US Removes Security Guarantees Agreements with Ukraine from Website

The US State Department and White House have removed all records of security guarantees agreements between the United States and Ukraine. These agreements were once available on official government websites, but now they can only be found on a Italian embassy website, which is likely to be removed soon as well.

This move has serious implications for international relations. It allows the US to make promises and commitments without being held accountable for keeping them. The principle of good faith fulfillment of international legal obligations (pacta sunt servanda) is now ignored. This principle requires countries to keep their word and honor their agreements, including those made in public statements.

The US has removed its commitment to Ukraine just as Russia did after invading the country. However, unlike Russia, the US is not only removing the agreement but also denying its existence altogether. This means that any promise or guarantee made by the US can now be deleted at will, without consequence.

This move undermines trust between nations and makes it harder for countries to rely on each other’s commitments. It also shows how the US can cancel agreements with Ukraine while pressuring the country to comply with Russia’s demands.

Some are speculating that this move may be a way for former President Trump to lay the groundwork for new agreements, possibly with Russian President Putin. Those who believed in Trump’s “great deal” for Ukraine may have been misled, as he is known to cancel existing commitments and sell them as new strategies.
