The most amusing part for me was that when a citizen was transferring money to pay a fine and entered in the purpose: “We will win gloriously,” I had to explain that there was no criminal element in these words, – Aleko Tskitishvili, head of the Human Rights Center, told journalists at the court where he was questioned as a witness in the so-called attempted sabotage case, in the presence of a magistrate judge.
As he noted after the interrogation ended, the investigation launched in the so-called attempted sabotage case is entirely to fulfill the “Russian regime’s orders.”
“I expected questions about the activities of the Tbilisi Human Rights House, and at the same time, it turned out that they were also interested in the activities of the Human Rights Center. I had this expectation because, as you know, on April 29, my house was searched, and they also conducted a personal search on me, so I was somehow prepared in that direction for questions related to the Human Rights House projects. These questions are nothing new; Ivanishvili’s regime propagandists have been spinning them, both in the media and in public statements. ‘How do they transfer the money,’ ‘Why were you paying the fine amounts’ – I mainly answered these questions. Accordingly, no new questions were asked. The most amusing part for me was that apparently, when a citizen was transferring money to pay the fine and entered ‘We will win gloriously’ in the purpose, in connection with this, I had to explain that there was no criminal element in these words, and that they are words from Maro Makashvili, which truly, just as there was a fight against Russian occupation back then, now a fight is ongoing against the Russian regime, and we will truly win gloriously.
Of course, this investigation is entirely to fulfill the Russian regime’s orders; this is a process written according to Russia’s script, and components of this process include both the investigation and every hearing, our summonses, and the goal is the dissolution of non-governmental organizations. We see that political opposition parties are also being dissolved. This process is unfolding according to the clean Belarus and Russia script. Here, we must expect everything from both the regime and their services,” – Aleko Tskitishvili stated.
For reference, on August 27, the prosecution released information stating that the Tbilisi City Court had approved the prosecution’s motion to place liens on the bank accounts of the following organizations: International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy, Institute for Development of Freedom of Information, Defenders of Democracy, Georgia’s Democratic Initiative, Sapari, and the Social Justice Center.
According to the prosecution, the case concerns an investigation conducted by the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office into sabotage, attempted sabotage under aggravating circumstances, assistance in hostile activities for a foreign organization or an organization under foreign control, and the mobilization of finances for activities aimed against Georgia’s constitutional order and national security. Later, the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office summoned the heads of certain non-governmental organizations for questioning as witnesses.
