Aleko Elisashvili Faces Possible Arrest in Court Hearing
A court hearing took place today for Aleko Elisashvili, a leader of the coalition “Strengthening Georgia.” The court was discussing his case, and he believes that today’s proceedings might lead to his arrest.
Elisashvili told the Tbilisi City Court that everything depends on the judge’s character and mood. He also mentioned that the decision made by the “Georgian Dream” party could influence the outcome of the hearing.
The court is examining a case against Elisashvili, who has been accused of verbally and physically assaulting Ali Babaev, the Chairman of the Azerbaijan National Congress and one of the founders of the “Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia” party. However, Elisashvili himself says he does not know what kind of politician he is.
The prosecution claims that Elisashvili committed this act based on political grounds. But Elisashvili argues that he was actually a victim of political persecution. He pointed out the case of Giorgi Gakharia, who was beaten in Batumi and had a case opened against him under assault charges. Elisashvili sees no justice being served.
Aleko Elisashvili also spoke about his transfer to “Vivamed” clinic after his arrest. During this time, he says that the clinic hid information about his broken rib and later shared his X-ray photo on social media without consent.
The Personal Data Protection Service found the clinic “Vivamed” and Nino Nadiradze guilty of violating Elisashvili’s rights. They were ordered to remove his X-ray photo from their social media.
Elisashvili has been charged under Article 156, Part 2, Subparagraph “a” of the Criminal Code of Georgia (political persecution related to political activities, committed with violence). This carries a penalty of up to three years of imprisonment. However, he was released on a 4,000 GEL bail.
