According to the “United National Movement” faction in the Gori Municipal Council, legal procedures for the impeachment of Gori Municipal Council Chairman David Razmadze have been initiated.
As Beka Korchilava, a member of the “United National Movement” in the Gori Municipal Council, told Interpressnews, the reason is the statements made by David Razmadze in an interview with The New York Times.
Korchilava stated that the “United National Movement” faction is holding consultations with the “Gakharia for Georgia” party regarding Razmadze’s removal.
“We started the procedures today, we are holding consultations, and by the end of the day, we will definitely submit an official statement. We are consulting with my colleagues and the ‘Gakharia for Georgia’ party. I want everyone to join us and submit the statement together. If they oppose or abstain, of course, the ‘United National Movement’ will still register the statement and demand the resignation of the Municipal Council Chairman. The statement made by David Razmadze is shameful and an insult to the people of Gori. He accuses our fighters, security forces, and peaceful citizens of 2008 of looting the city. This is utterly unimaginable and disgraceful, especially against the backdrop of the August anniversary, when just a few days ago, they visited the village of Shindisi, shedding crocodile tears in front of the heroes who died in 2008. This is regrettable, and that is why we have started procedural steps to wash away the shame that is David Razmadze’s chairmanship of the Gori Municipal Council,” said Beka Korchilava.
For context, David Razmadze, Chairman of the Gori Municipal Council, stated in an interview with The New York Times: “The Russians came here as peacekeepers, and thank God they did, because Misha’s thugs were looting the entire city.” Razmadze’s interview is part of an extensive article by the American publication about Georgia, titled “How Georgia Fell From the Vanguard of Democracy to the Front Line of Autocracy.” The New York Times notes that in the interview, the Chairman of the Gori Municipal Council blamed the 2008 August Russian aggression on Georgia’s third president, Mikheil Saakashvili.
