According to Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, the construction of a tramway line will begin in Tbilisi.
As Kakha Kaladze noted, a modern, European-standard tramway line will connect the Didi Dighomi settlement with the Didube metro station.
“This concerns a very important project for Tbilisi. For the first time in Georgia’s history of independence, a tramway project will be implemented. Today, we are announcing a tender for the design and construction works of the tramway line. Previously, we had announced a tender for market research. We have comprehensive information regarding what needs to be done and on which section the project should be implemented. Considering the growing population of Didi Dighomi, it is necessary to create alternative means of transportation. In this case, the tramway is the most optimal solution. Due to its dimensions, it has the highest capacity among ground-based public transportation options. It is an environmentally friendly mode of transport and, in the long term, is far more cost-effective compared to other ground-based public transport types,” the Mayor stated.
According to him, given that the Didube metro station is a key hub not only for the capital but also for intercity passenger transport, establishing this connection from Didi Dighomi is strategically important.
Regarding the tramway line itself, the Mayor stated that it will span 7.5 kilometers and include 11 stops.
“As a result, the tramway will ensure safe, comfortable, and fast transportation for the increased passenger flow in the Didi Dighomi settlement, reduce the load on buses and minibuses, alleviate traffic congestion, and improve the environmental situation. The tramway will be integrated into the existing public transportation network. A unified, flexible, comfortable, and sustainable transport network will be created, tailored to the needs of every citizen,” Kakha Kaladze stated.
