**Bulgaria’s Election Results to Be Re-Counted**
The Constitutional Court in Bulgaria has ordered a full re-count of the country’s parliamentary election results. This decision was made after an audit found voting discrepancies in nearly half of the sampled polling stations.
The election took place in October 2024, and the current government coalition is at risk of losing its slim six-seat majority. The coalition is led by former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, who currently heads the conservative-populist GERB party.
Several parties contested the results at the local level, citing irregularities. After a court-ordered audit, voting discrepancies were found in many polling stations. As a result, adjustments to the total seat counts in Bulgaria’s parliament may be made.
This announcement comes amid an unstable period for Bulgaria, with seven elections being held since 2021. None of these elections have produced a stable government. Borissov resigned as Prime Minister in 2021 due to corruption allegations.
The re-count also coincides with news from neighboring Romania. A presidential candidate and right-wing populist, Calin Georgescu, has been charged by prosecutors for alleged crimes related to the country’s recent elections.
