In a surprise move, Russia’s western border was targeted by coordinated drone attacks overnight on June 1-2. **Russian Response**
Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed that its air defense systems intercepted a total of 162 Ukrainian drones during the assault. The drones were reportedly shot down in various regions across Russia, with Kursk and Belgorod Oblast being among the most targeted areas. However, despite these claims, it is clear that many more drones managed to evade Russian defenses.
**Humanitarian Impact**
While there were no reported civilian casualties, local residents experienced some damage due to the attacks. In Voronezh Oblast, a high-voltage wire broke on the M-4 “Don” highway, causing infrastructure damage and broken windows in houses and vehicles. The Governor of Voronezh Oblast reported that there were no civilian casualties among the 15 drones intercepted in the region.
**Previous Attacks**
It’s worth noting that this is not the first time Russia has been targeted by drone attacks. In January 2025, a similar attack was carried out against the Borisoglebsk military airfield, which houses an aviation repair plant.
