**Drone Attacks Hit Russian Territory on Ukraine Border**
In the early hours of May 31, drones struck multiple locations in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, a region bordering Ukraine. The attacks targeted areas reportedly housing Russian military personnel.
Kursk Oblast is situated in western Russia, directly adjacent to Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast, which has been threatened by Russian forces recently. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that Russia had amassed around 50,000 troops near the border with Sumy Oblast, signaling preparation for a potential new offensive.
This latest drone attack comes on the heels of an August 2024 incursion into Kursk Oblast by Ukrainian forces. The operation aimed to create a buffer zone inside Russian territory and divert Russian resources from other fronts. However, as of 2025, Russian forces with North Korean reinforcements have largely pushed back the Ukrainians.
**Attacks Hit Residential Areas, Military Positions**
According to reports, the drone strikes hit residential areas in the city of Rylsk and the Lgov district. Acting Kursk governor Alexander Khinshtein claimed that the attacks caused fires and damaged building facades. However, Russian media outlet Pepel reported that the drones specifically targeted locations where Russian soldiers were stationed.
Ukrainian Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) resources corroborated this information. The strikes in Rylsk involved drones hitting two five-story apartment buildings, causing fires and damaging building facades. In the village of Artakovo in Lgov district, the attacks hit a garage and two other structures, resulting in 14 injured people across both locations.
**Russian Authorities Attribute Attacks to Ukraine**
Russian authorities have attributed the drone strikes to Ukraine, although official representatives in Kyiv have not yet issued any statement regarding the incidents. The attacks come as tensions continue to escalate between Russia and Ukraine on their shared border.
This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing conflict between the two nations and the potential for increased violence in the region. As the situation unfolds, it will be essential to monitor developments and assess the implications for regional stability.
