**European Union’s Popularity Soars Amid Ukraine Crisis**
A recent survey has revealed a significant boost in public trust for the European Union. The Eurobarometer poll, which was conducted across all 27 EU member states and other countries, shows that a record-high number of citizens support the EU’s efforts to assist Ukraine.
**Majority Back Military Aid to Ukraine**
The survey found that 59% of European citizens agree with the EU financing the purchase and supply of military equipment to Ukraine. This is a clear indication that the war in Ukraine has resonated deeply with Europeans, who see Russia’s actions as a threat to their own security. In fact, 77% of respondents believe that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine poses a risk to the EU’s security.
**Warm Welcome for Ukrainian Refugees**
The poll also showed overwhelming support for welcoming Ukrainian refugees into the European Union. A staggering 80% of Europeans agree with this stance, highlighting the bloc’s commitment to providing a safe haven for those affected by the war.
**Financial and Humanitarian Support Also Gains Broad Approval**
Furthermore, over three-quarters (76%) of respondents back providing financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, demonstrating the EU’s dedication to supporting its neighboring country in this time of need. The survey also found that 60% of Europeans approve of granting candidate status to Ukraine, underscoring their support for the country’s European integration aspirations.
**Security Concerns Dominate European Minds**
The war in Ukraine remains at the forefront of European concerns, with 27% of respondents considering it the most important issue facing the EU. This is followed closely by international situation (24%) and security and defense (20%).
**Record Levels of Trust in EU Institutions**
Notably, the survey revealed a significant boost in trust among Europeans for EU institutions. A record 52% of citizens trust the EU, marking the highest level since 2007. Young people aged 15-24 were found to be particularly trusting of the EU, with 59% expressing their confidence.
**Defense Cooperation Takes Center Stage**
The poll also highlighted a growing priority among Europeans for defense cooperation. An impressive 81% support a common defense and security policy among member states – a result not seen since 2004. This suggests that the EU’s efforts to strengthen its collective defense capabilities are gaining traction with citizens.
**EU Budget Priorities Reflect Changing Times**
When asked about EU budget priorities, Europeans were clear in their preferences: they want to see more funds allocated towards defense and security (43%), employment, social affairs, and public health (42%), and education, training, youth, culture, and media (34%).
The Eurobarometer survey provides a valuable snapshot of European public opinion on key issues. As the bloc continues to navigate the complexities of the Ukraine crisis, these results underscore the need for collective action and cooperation among EU member states.
