**Latvia’s Foreign Minister Calls for Visa Ban on Russian Citizens**
In a move to strengthen European security, Latvia’s Foreign Minister Baiba Braže has urged EU countries to stop issuing visas to Russian citizens. In a post on social media platform X, she emphasized the serious security concerns surrounding Russia’s actions.
According to Braže, the number of Schengen visas granted to Russian nationals increased by 25% in 2024 compared to 2023. This rise in visa approvals has sparked concern among European leaders, who consider Russia an “existential threat” due to its invasion of Ukraine and potential attacks on NATO’s eastern flank.
**Russia: A Growing Security Concern**
The situation with Russia has been deteriorating since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. European leaders have warned that if Ukraine falls, Russia may attack NATO’s eastern flank. This has led to increased security concerns among EU countries.
Braže’s call for a visa ban on Russian nationals echoes an earlier appeal made by Latvia’s Minister of Interior, Rihards Kozlovskis. He warned that travel from Russia poses risks to the bloc’s internal security. Braže noted that a significant number of Schengen visas granted to Russian citizens were for tourism purposes.
**Statistics Reveal Sharp Rise in Visa Approvals**
Data released by the Council of Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs of the EU in Brussels shows that 565,069 Schengen tourist visas were granted to Russian nationals in 2024. This represents a substantial increase from previous years. Notably, 90% of these visas were for tourism purposes.
Italy was the top recipient of visa applications from Russians, handling 143,517 requests – 28% of the total. The country also issued the highest number of Schengen visas to Russian citizens, granting 134,141 visas – 30% of all approved applications.
**EU Countries Must Take Action**
Braže’s appeal highlights the need for EU countries to take action to strengthen their security. By halting visa issuance to Russian nationals, they can reduce the risk of internal threats and protect European citizens.
As tensions between Russia and Europe continue to escalate, it is essential that EU countries work together to address these concerns. The move by Braže and Kozlovskis to call for a visa ban on Russian nationals demonstrates Latvia’s commitment to strengthening security within the EU.
