**Ukraine Lags Behind Russia in Tech Race as Russian Offensive Continues**

Mariia Berlinska, head of the Center for Aerial Reconnaissance Support, and Yehor Firsov, a military and civil society figure, have highlighted the issue in an opinion piece. According to Berlinska, Russia has adopted a state-level policy that involves tens of thousands of top engineers working on its military-industrial complex. This includes integrating hundreds of engineering teams from partners such as China, North Korea, Belarus, and others.
Berlinska emphasizes that Ukraine’s reliance on low-tech solutions is no longer sufficient to keep up with Russia’s advanced technology. “We’re trying to keep up with cheap, simple technologies,” she says, “but these are only part of the answer.” What is needed, she argues, is a leap to an entirely new qualitative level, and fundamental and applied science is essential for that.
**Ukraine Needs a New Level of Defense Tech**
Berlinska warns that if Ukraine continues to rely on cobbled-together solutions, it will ultimately end in disaster. “Those solutions will stop working,” she says, “then the Russians will unleash a few more game changers, and finally, the army will become demoralized – and then there’ll be no more Ukrainians left.”
The expert emphasizes that Ukraine needs to create a state policy strategy for the development of military technologies. This must be priority number one. She notes that currently, the entire technological front is being held by just a few thousand engineers and manufacturers.
**Rebuilding the Science Front**
Berlinska stresses that Ukraine needs as much support as possible to train new specialists and rebuild fundamental science. However, this process takes at least 5-10 years. “We already created miracles using components from the hobbyist radio market,” she says. “But these solutions are increasingly being defeated by the systematic, monumental, science-based projects of the joint Russian-Iranian-Chinese engineering teams.”
