**Russian-Ukraine Peace Efforts Remain Stuck**
A recent phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has not led to any changes in the status quo of Russia’s peace efforts, according to Ukrainian presidential advisor Mykhailo Podolyak.
The conversation between Trump and Putin on May 19 was seen as an opportunity for some movement towards a ceasefire. However, according to Podolyak, Russia remains committed to continuing its war with Ukraine. In fact, Putin has stated that his country’s position in the negotiations remains unchanged and requires “eliminating the root causes” of the war.
Podolyak pointed out that while the US continues to offer mediation and support for a ceasefire, Russia’s stance is unchanged. He noted that the Russian government continues to insist on sweeping territorial demands, including Ukraine accepting the loss of Crimea and four eastern regions.
**Russia’s Unchanged Position**
The Ukrainian advisor was clear in his assessment: “There is Russia’s unchanged position: it still seeks war, destruction, and killing, believing them to be the only means of preserving its current state.” He also highlighted that the Russian government continues to refuse a ceasefire, instead searching for “root causes” of the war.
Podolyak’s comments come after a recent meeting between Ukrainian and Russian officials in Istanbul ended without any significant progress. The Russians sent a delegation of low-level officials who reiterated their demands, while Ukraine offered an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
**US Response**
In the aftermath of the Trump-Putin call, US President Donald Trump stated that Russia and Ukraine would “immediately start” negotiations towards a ceasefire and end to the war. However, he refused to commit to additional sanctions against Russia and hinted that Washington might walk away from peace talks unless progress is made.
**What’s Next?**
The ongoing stalemate in peace efforts has significant implications for the region. As tensions remain high, it remains to be seen whether either side will budge or if negotiations will continue to stall.
