**Ukrainian Soldier’s Remarkable Act of Resilience: Turning a Deadly Mine into a Ukulele**

Andrii, a member of the 128th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade, lost his foot in an explosion but continues to fight for Ukraine with his creative spirit intact.
The Soviet TM-62M anti-tank mine is a highly deadly device that can penetrate tank hulls and cause fatal damage to military vehicles. However, Andrii saw its potential as a musical instrument, leveraging his experience as a professional musician and sound engineer. He explains that the mine’s casing can be used as a resonator, much like his own banjo and homemade bass guitars.
**From Musician to Sapper**
Before becoming a soldier, Andrii was a volunteer auto mechanic who joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2014. When the full-scale war began, he voluntarily joined the 128th brigade and became a sapper, tasked with repairing wires in minefields under intense fire. His experience as a musician helped him stay focused during these high-risk missions.
**Turning Adversity into Art**
In June 2022, Andrii started serving as a sapper, but his life took a dramatic turn when he stepped on an anti-personnel mine and lost his foot in the spring of 2023. Despite this setback, he didn’t give up. During rehabilitation, music helped him overcome phantom pain and keep his spirit up.
After eight months of rehabilitation, Andrii learned to walk with a prosthesis and returned to the battalion to continue mine clearance. His motivation is clear: “Experienced sappers are hard to replace, and my motivation is to put an end to the Moscow empire, which has troubled us for 300 years.”
**A Symbol of Hope**
Andrii’s ukulele-making skills have become a symbol of hope in Ukraine. As he says, “If past generations didn’t fully resolve this issue, I simply want to finish the job.” His story serves as a testament to the resilience and creativity of Ukrainian soldiers who continue to fight for their country.
