**Romania Chooses Pro-EU Candidate as President in Crucial Election**
In a closely watched election, Nicusor Dan, the pro-European Union candidate, has won the Romanian presidential runoff on May 18, defeating far-right challenger George Simion. With over 90% of votes counted, Dan secured a convincing victory with 53.8% of the vote, compared to Simion’s 46.2%.
For Ukraine, this outcome is a significant relief. Simion’s election would have meant the loss of a key ally in Romania, which has been crucial in providing military and humanitarian aid during Russia’s full-scale war. Ukraine was bracing for the worst, with Simion vowing to end military aid to their country.
**A Win for Ukrainian Interests**
As mayor of Bucharest, Dan has consistently supported aid to Ukraine, calling it “essential for the security of Romania.” This stance is a welcome respite from Simion’s Euroskeptic platform, which included ending military assistance to Ukraine. In fact, Simion was so opposed to Ukraine that he was banned from entering both Ukraine and neighboring Moldova due to his anti-Ukrainian views.
**A Troubling History**
The Romanian presidential election follows a tumultuous history of voter manipulation. The first round in November 2024 was invalidated due to evidence of foreign interference, leading to the annulment of the results. The populist candidate Calin Georgescu, who promoted conspiracy theories and supported Russia, won that initial round. Romania then held new elections on May 4, which Simion won with nearly 41% of the votes.
**Consequences for Ukraine**
Simion’s defeat is a significant victory for Ukrainian interests. Romania has played a crucial role in supporting Ukraine, including donating a U.S.-made Patriot missile system and signing a bilateral security agreement with Kyiv. Bucharest has also facilitated the transit of Ukrainian agricultural exports, countering Russia’s threats to Black Sea maritime trade.
