**Ukrainian Military Commander Quits, Blasts Leadership for “Senseless Orders” and Unnecessary Casualties**
A top commander of Ukraine’s military has resigned in a scathing critique of the country’s leadership, accusing them of issuing “senseless orders” that led to unnecessary casualties. Oleksandr Shyrshyn, commander of the 47 Separate Mechanized Brigade, made his comments on Facebook on May 16.
According to Shyrshyn, he was tasked with carrying out missions that were not only ineffective but also put the lives of his soldiers at risk. “I have never received more stupid tasks than in the current direction,” he wrote. “Someday I will tell you the details, but the stupid loss of people, trembling in front of a stupid generals, leads to nothing but failures.”
This is not the first time Ukraine’s military leadership has faced criticism from within its own ranks. In 2023, it was reported that the brigade, also known as “Magura,” had been trained and equipped by NATO countries in preparation for a summer counteroffensive against Russia.
**Background on Ukraine’s Military Operations**
In August 2024, Ukraine launched a cross-border incursion into Russia’s Kursk Oblast, marking the first major foreign ground offensive into Russian territory since World War II. The operation aimed to delay a planned Russian push into Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast and redirect Russian forces away from eastern Donetsk Oblast.
However, Moscow responded with a counteroffensive in early March, retaking large portions of territory, including the town of Sudzha. Ukrainian forces have since withdrawn from much of the area but still maintain limited control in some zones as of late April.
**Shyrshyn’s Critique of Military Leadership**
In his resignation statement, Shyrshyn also criticized Ukraine’s military leadership for focusing on punishments rather than results. “All they are capable of is reprimands, investigations, imposition of penalties,” he wrote. “Everyone is going to hell.” He expressed hope that his formal report requesting dismissal from his post would be accepted soon.
Shyrshyn’s comments have sparked debate within Ukraine and internationally about the effectiveness of the country’s military leadership in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
