**Tensions Rise in US-Georgia Relations: Georgian Dream’s Kobakhidze Weighs In**
The relationship between the United States and Georgia has taken a turn for the worse, according to Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. Speaking on live TV, Kobakhidze described the current state of affairs as “active-negative,” citing US sanctions against top officials in his government.
Kobakhidze’s comments come after he wrote an open letter to Donald Trump and JD Vance, expressing frustration with what he sees as a lack of response from the new US administration. The Prime Minister claimed that the Biden administration has sanctioned several high-ranking officials, including Vice Prime Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri.
**”Active-Negative” Relations**
Kobakhidze stated that the current state of relations cannot be considered “neutral,” as implied by the US government’s silence on the matter. He emphasized that the situation is not just passive, but rather “active-negative,” with the US taking action against Georgian officials and institutions.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the MEGOBARI Act, which would impose broader sanctions on GD officials and their family members. Kobakhidze expressed hope that Trump will take a more sympathetic view of Georgia’s situation and reset relations between the two countries.
**Betting on Trump**
Kobakhidze has been betting on Trump to come out on top in his battle with the “deep state.” However, as the MEGOBARI Act nears Trump’s desk, GD’s hopes appear to be waning. The Prime Minister acknowledged that if the bill passes, it would be a significant blow to Georgia’s relations with the US.
**Funding and Influence**
Kobakhidze also accused USAID and the NED of inciting hatred in Georgian society and compared their methods to those of the KGB in the 1990s. He claimed that these organizations have been funding efforts to undermine the Orthodox Church, a central institution in Georgia’s identity.
**Tougher Times Ahead**
Kobakhidze warned that if the US does not respond positively to Georgia’s overtures, relations will only deteriorate further. In this scenario, he stated that the “deep state” would remain in power, and Georgia would face more challenges.
The Prime Minister attempted to shift responsibility away from the Georgian Dream government by stating that the state of bilateral relations depends on Trump’s actions. He emphasized that if Trump weakens the “deep state,” US-Georgia relations will improve, but otherwise, the status quo will prevail.
**Additional Concerns**
During the interview, Kobakhidze also expressed concerns about Europe’s national identities and accused Western powers of sacrificing Ukraine in the war with Russia. He called on European leaders to take a fairer attitude towards Georgia and its people.
The Prime Minister also commented on the upcoming local elections in Georgia, stating that all opposition parties will ultimately participate in the polls, despite their initial boycott plans.
