A statement by the Parliament of Georgia, responding to the “MEGOBARI Act” adopted by the US House of Representatives. The statement addresses several issues:
1. **Unfair Approach to European Integration**: The Georgian Government received candidate status in December 2023 despite an unfair approach from European bureaucracy. This approach resumed in 2024, with Georgia being forced to deal with artificial obstacles on its path towards European integration.
2. **Integration into NATO**: Georgia’s integration into NATO is considered unrealistic by the new US Administration and NATO. Therefore, the country’s activity would not make much sense as a medium-term prospect.
3. **Groundless Accusations**: The accusation of “blocking Euro-Atlantic integration” against Georgia’s authorities is groundless. Similarly, accusations of establishing inappropriate ties with Russia, China, and Iran are also false.
* **Relations with Russia**: Despite 20% of its territory being occupied by Russia, Georgia does not have diplomatic relations with the country. The share of trade with Russia in Georgia’s trade turnover is lower than 12%. A Joint Assessment Mission has concluded that Georgia does not allow its territory to be used by the Russian Federation to circumvent sanctions.
* **Relations with China and Iran**: Relations between Georgia and China match the level of relations found between the US and China. Similarly, relations between Georgia and Iran are underdeveloped compared to those between Iran and other countries in the region.
4. **Lies and Unfairness**: The so-called MEGOBARI Act is underpinned by violent hatred of the deep state towards Georgia. Instead of acting independently from the deep state, the Congress demands new sanctions.
5. **Reaction of Georgian Society**: The Georgian people react adequately to such absurd decisions. Georgian society has given up on taking seriously the European Parliament, which has adopted six hostile resolutions about Georgia since 2022. Unfortunately, the US Congress is exposing itself to similar reputational damage.
