**Clashes Continue on Ukraine’s Front Line Despite Russia’s Ceasefire Declaration**
Despite Russia’s declaration of a “humanitarian ceasefire” for Victory Day, clashes between Ukrainian forces and Russian troops continued to escalate on May 8. The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported over 100 combat incidents across the front line, with the majority occurring in the Donbas region.
The cease-fire declaration was made by Russia as part of its Victory Day celebrations, which commemorate the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. However, Ukrainian officials have repeatedly expressed skepticism about Russia’s intentions, pointing to the continued attacks on Ukrainian positions and civilians.
**Russia’s Ballistic Missiles Make April Deadliest Month for Ukrainian Civilians**
A report by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine revealed that 209 civilians were killed and 1,146 injured in April, making it the deadliest month since September 2024. The majority of civilian casualties were caused by Russian missile attacks or shelling.
The report also noted a broader trend of increased harm to civilians in 2025 compared to 2024, with 664 civilians killed and 3,425 injured between January and April this year.
**Ukrainians Unwilling to Compromise on Territory or Western Course**
A nationwide poll conducted by the Razumkov Center found that the majority of Ukrainians (56.9%) are unwilling to compromise on either territorial integrity or Ukraine’s pro-Western direction in negotiations with Russia.
Only 11.1% said they would consider ceding territory, while 14.7% would be open to changing Ukraine’s geopolitical course. The poll also found that two-thirds of respondents believe Russia would violate any peace agreement and resume its attacks when convenient.
**Rebuilding Medical Facilities Amid Ongoing Attacks**
The report noted that Ukraine has managed to rebuild 700 medical facilities and partially restore 312, including critical hospitals and primary health care centers in frontline regions.
However, ongoing attacks by Russian forces continue to put pressure on the country’s healthcare system. Ambulances have been damaged or destroyed, and hospitals have been hit by missiles.
**Support for Ukraine’s Integration with the West Remains Strong**
The poll found that more than half of respondents (57.2%) favor the European model of development, compared to just 0.7% who prefer a Russian-leaning model.
Ukraine has sought closer integration with the West since the start of Russia’s war, and this support is seen as a key factor in the country’s ability to resist Russian aggression.
