**Ukraine’s Azov Brigade Creates International Battalion**
In a bold move to bolster its defenses against Russian aggression, Ukraine’s Azov Brigade has established an international battalion for foreign volunteers. The decision was made in 2024, after nearly a decade of experience fighting alongside Ukrainian forces.

Among those individuals are Colonel Bakhva Chikobava of the Georgian army, who returned to Mariupol with a group of instructors to stand alongside Azov service members and was killed in battle on March 19, 2022.
The International Battalion, or “Interbat,” as it’s called, is the result of Ukraine passing a law allowing foreigners to serve in the National Guard of Ukraine. This legislation created an opportunity for foreign volunteers with combat experience to join the Azov Brigade. These fighters were initially used as instructors within the brigade and soon found themselves on the front lines.

The most common response to the question “Why did you decide to fight for Ukraine?” is: “Because it’s the right thing to do.” These individuals are volunteers, not mercenaries. They deserve our respect and gratitude for their determination in the face of adversity.
