**NGOs Unite on May 9: A Call for Unity and Freedom**
In a bold move, non-governmental organizations in Georgia have joined forces with the idea of the May 9 Unity and Freedom Day. Led by Nino Lomjaria, Executive Director of the Georgian European Orbit, they are calling on everyone to come together on Europe Square on May 9 at 7:00 PM.
According to Ms. Lomjaria, Georgia’s place is in Europe, and the promise of Europe belongs to the Georgian people. “May 9 – Europe Day – is our day of unity and freedom,” she said. The date marks the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the European Union, which has been a powerful force for peace, prosperity, and human rights.
But despite this history of cooperation, Georgia faces many challenges that threaten its stability and citizens’ well-being. These include political repression, corruption, impunity for perpetrators, poverty, and injustice. “We believe that joining the European Union is vital for our country’s development, security, and people’s welfare,” Ms. Lomjaria emphasized.
So, what’s behind this renewed call for unity? The answer lies in Georgia’s centuries-long journey towards European civilization. NGOs and citizens alike are determined to see their country succeed on its path to EU membership. As Ms. Lomjaria noted, “The will of the people always defeats evil.” And it is precisely this collective determination that has inspired the call for unity on May 9.
**A Message of Unity**
To drive home the message, four separate marches will converge on Europe Square from different parts of Tbilisi: the Parliament building (students’ march), Marjanishvili Square, Republic Square, and Avlabari metro station. All are invited to join in solidarity with a single, unifying demand: to stand together for freedom and unity.
The symbolism is clear: Georgia belongs to Europe, and Europe’s promise of peace, prosperity, and human rights belongs to the Georgian people. In this spirit, NGOs and citizens alike are calling on everyone to come together on May 9 at 7:00 PM and make their choice – a choice for unity, freedom, and a better future.
**A Time for Unity**
So, what does it mean to be part of Europe? It means being free from violence, injustice, and poverty. It means enjoying decent living conditions and protection from persecution, harassment, or unjust treatment. It’s about making choices that benefit the many, not just the privileged few.
As Ms. Lomjaria put it, “Our strength is in Europe. Our strength is in unity.” On May 9, Georgians will gather to reaffirm their commitment to these values and to demand a better future for all. Will you join them?
