**Russian Drones Used in Mass Attack on Ukraine’s Kharkiv City, Injuring 51 People**
A devastating drone attack by Russian forces on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv has left at least 51 people injured, including two children. The strike occurred late on May 2 and involved loitering munitions, likely the Shahed-type “Geran-2” drones.
According to Ukraine’s regional prosecutors, the attack targeted four districts of Kharkiv, causing numerous fires across the city. Investigators have found that the Russian drones carried thermobaric warheads, a type of weapon known for its destructive power and ability to pose extreme risks to civilians. The use of such weapons may constitute a deliberate violation of international humanitarian law.
**President Zelensky Condemns Attack**
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly condemned the attack, stating that there were no military targets in the area. He described Russia’s actions as those of “tyrants” who are targeting residential buildings and civilians.
The injured included two children, aged 11 and 16, while at least eight victims were hospitalized. The attack also damaged residential buildings, educational institutions, businesses, vehicles, and shops. Local authorities have launched pretrial investigations into war crimes under Ukrainian criminal code Article 438.
**Recurring Attacks on Kharkiv**
Kharkiv has faced repeated airstrikes throughout Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. While Moscow continues to express readiness for peace talks, Ukrainian officials have dismissed such rhetoric as manipulation, pointing to intensifying attacks across the country.
Ukrainian President Zelensky has renewed calls for Ukraine’s partners to urgently strengthen air defenses, stating that “almost every night in Ukraine turns into a horror that results in the loss of lives.” In March alone, 164 Ukrainian civilians were killed and 910 injured due to missile and drone strikes, primarily in areas under Kyiv’s control.
**The War on Civilians**
Russia’s use of thermobaric warheads in this attack highlights its disregard for civilian life. The deployment of such weapons is a clear indication that the Russian military is targeting residential areas and civilians, rather than military targets.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the brutal reality of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The international community must take note of these atrocities and hold Russia accountable for its actions.
