**European Court of Human Rights Intervenes in Serbia’s Use of Sonic Weapons**

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has issued an interim measure to prevent the Serbian government from using sound devices for crowd control. This decision comes after a request from 47 applicants who were part of the March 15 protest, alleging that sonic weapons were used against them.

**A Warning to the Government**

The court’s ruling makes it clear that the use of sonic weapons for crowd control is unlawful in Serbia. The government has been warned not to use such devices again, except for communication purposes. This means that any sound devices used for crowd control must be stopped immediately. The court emphasized that this decision does not mean they have taken a position on whether sonic weapons were used on March 15, and it’s without prejudice to any application the applicants might lodge.

**A Rare Intervention**

The ECHR only grants measures like this on an exceptional basis, when applicants face imminent risk of irreparable harm. In this case, the court deemed that preventing the use of sonic weapons was necessary to protect the applicants from further harm.

**An Investigation is Needed**

The applicants also requested an effective investigation into allegations that a sonic weapon had been used against them during the March 15 protest. This investigation has not yet taken place, and it remains unclear whether one will be conducted in accordance with the court’s ruling.
