**Georgia’s Speaker of Parliament Praises Irakli Gharibashvili for His Work**
In a surprising move, Georgian politician Irakli Gharibashvili has decided to leave politics. But rather than criticizing him, the Speaker of Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, has come out in support of his decision and praised him for his work.
According to Papuashvili, Gharibashvili played a crucial role in keeping Georgia out of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. “At the time when the war in Ukraine began, there was direct pressure from the Biden administration to get involved in the escalation with Russia,” he said. “Irakli Gharibashvili took a tough, direct position, which was decisive in maintaining peace in Georgia.” Papuashvili also thanked Gharibashvili for resisting pressure from the US to involve Georgia in the conflict.
**A Non-Political Hero?**
Papuashvili also praised Gharibashvili’s leadership during the pandemic and his role in starting economic growth in Georgia. “I am confident that he, as a non-politician in this case, will play an important role in the further development of Georgia,” he said.
But what’s striking about Papuashvili’s comments is not just the praise for Gharibashvili, but also the tone of the criticisms. When asked why Gharibashvili left politics, Papuashvilli responded that it was because he wanted to defeat the “deep state”, which he claimed was a goal shared by former US President Donald Trump.
**The ‘Deep State’ and Sanctions**
Papuashvili’s comments on the “deep state” are intriguing. While some might see it as an attempt to deflect criticism, others might view it as a genuine concern about Georgia’s internal politics. As for Gharibashvili not facing sanctions while other leaders in his party have been targeted, Papuashvilli simply shrugged and said he hadn’t faced sanctions either.
**A New Chairman for the Georgian Dream Party**
Finally, with Gharibashvili out of the picture, the question on everyone’s mind is who will take over as chairman of the Georgian Dream party. According to Papuashvilli, it will be decided at a party congress.
