**Serbian Unions Mark Labor Day in Belgrade**
On Thursday, May 1st, the Nezavisnost Branch Unions (UGS) gathered at Slavija square in central Belgrade to mark International Labor Day. The unions chose a significant spot to hold their gathering – a monument dedicated to Dimitrije Tucovic, an early 20th century fighter for workers’ rights.
Dimitrije Tucovic was a key figure in the fight for workers’ rights in Serbia. He was buried in a small park within Slavija square, but his remains and monument were later moved to make way for a fountain. The UGS statement mentioned that the gathering would take place at 11:30 AM on Thursday, May 1st, at the relocated monument.
**Remembering the Novi Sad Tragedy**
In addition to marking Labor Day, the UGS also observed six months since the collapse of a concrete canopy at Novi Sad Railway Station. The tragic event claimed 16 lives and was followed by massive protests in Belgrade’s Slavija square. The protesters demanded accountability for the tragedy.
The gathering served as a reminder of the risks faced by workers every day. According to the UGS, 59 people lost their lives while working or due to work-related injuries in 2024. This statistic highlights the importance of prioritizing workplace safety and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.
**A Call for Accountability**
The gathering at Slavija square was not only a celebration of workers’ rights but also a reminder of the need for accountability. The students’ protests that followed the Novi Sad tragedy were a testament to the public’s desire for justice. As the UGS continues to advocate for workers’ rights, it is clear that their efforts will be crucial in promoting a safer and more just working environment.
