**Abkhazian Leader to Attend Russia’s Victory Day Celebrations**
Badra Gunba, the self-proclaimed leader of Abkhazia, will travel to Moscow to join in the commemorations of World War II’s end. This was announced by Alkhaz Kvitsinia, who claims to be the ambassador of the breakaway region. According to Kvitsinia, Putin himself extended an invitation to Gunba for the May 9 parade and related events.
It’s not surprising that Abkhazia’s “president” would receive such an invitation, given the close ties between Russia and the self-declared state. Georgia considers Abkhazia to be a part of its territory under occupation by Russian forces. The international community largely shares this view, with only a handful of countries recognizing Abkhazia as an independent nation.
Gunba’s participation in Victory Day celebrations is seen by some as an attempt to strengthen ties with Russia and solidify Abkhazia’s status as a pro-Russian entity. This move may also be intended to further erode any remaining hopes for reunification with Georgia, which has long been seeking the peaceful resolution of the conflict.
