**Ukraine’s Defense Industry Booms as Russia’s Invasion Continues**

As the war between Ukraine and Russia rages on, President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that over 40% of the weapons used by Ukrainian forces are now produced domestically. This significant expansion of Ukraine’s defense industry comes in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Speaking on April 16, the Day of the Defense Industry Worker, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine will continue to prioritize its own security and produce more weapons to guarantee its protection. “The trend is unchanged: Ukraine will do more and more (weapons) to guarantee its security — on its own and together with partners,” he said.

In an effort to reduce dependence on foreign deliveries, the Ukrainian government has allocated Hr 55 billion ($1.3 billion) in its 2025 budget for defense manufacturing. Additionally, the country is planning to raise over $1 billion in 2025 to develop the so-called Danish model, where arms are bought directly from Ukrainian manufacturers.

This shift towards domestic production is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to strengthen its own defense capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign support. As Zelensky noted, “Ukraine will always need its own strong weapons so that we can have our own strong Ukrainian state.”

**War Crimes Investigation Launched**

Separately, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office has launched a war crimes investigation after a captured and unarmed Ukrainian soldier was allegedly executed by Russian forces in Donetsk Oblast.

This incident highlights the escalating violence and human rights abuses taking place on the ground as the conflict continues. The international community must hold Russia accountable for such atrocities and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

**Global Response**

The global response to the Ukraine-Russia conflict is becoming increasingly complex. India, for example, has announced a new strategy to boost its defense exports, offering long-term, low-cost loans through its state-owned Export-Import Bank to foreign buyers.

Meanwhile, the European Union is considering sending “military advisors” to Ukraine to organize training for the Ukrainian military. This move reflects the EU’s growing involvement in the conflict and its commitment to supporting Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself against Russian aggression.

**Russian Aggression Continues**

Despite international pressure and condemnation, Russia continues to commit atrocities and violate ceasefire agreements. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson reported that Russia has violated a partial ceasefire covering energy infrastructure more than 30 times since it was agreed in March.

This aggression is having devastating consequences for the people of Ukraine, who are caught in the middle of this brutal conflict.

**The Fight Against Russian Aggression**

As the world watches with growing concern, there are still glimmers of hope. The Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) has announced that its efforts to disrupt Russia’s supply chain and prevent ammunition and military equipment from reaching Russian forces continue unabated.

Furthermore, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff are set to travel to Paris for high-level meetings on ending the war in Ukraine. This diplomatic push comes as world leaders seek a peaceful resolution to this brutal conflict.

As we move forward, it is essential that we remain vigilant and committed to supporting Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself against Russian aggression. The international community must continue to condemn Russia’s actions and hold those responsible accountable for their atrocities.
