**Clooney Foundation to Monitor Trial of Georgian Journalist**
The Clooney Foundation for Justice will monitor the trial of independent journalist Mzia Amaglobeli. The monitoring is set to begin today, March 18.
Mzia Amaglobeli was arrested on January 11 after placing a sticker on a police station fence calling for a general strike. She has been denied bail three times and faces up to seven years in prison.
The foundation stated that there have been reports of Amaglobeli being threatened and spat at by the city’s police chief after her arrest. To protest her detention, she went on a 38-day hunger strike while in custody.
**Government Response Sparks International Criticism**
The Georgian government’s response to mass protests since November 2024 has sparked international criticism. The protests have been characterized by police violence and mistreatment of detainees.
The Georgian Center for Media, Information, and Social Research has documented over 90 incidents where law enforcement officers attacked media workers or obstructed their work.
**TrialWatch Report**
After the trial, TrialWatch will prepare a report assessing the case based on international and regional fair trial standards. The Clooney Foundation provides free legal assistance to protect freedom of speech and women’s rights in over 40 countries.
