Gunia, a Ukrainian fashion brand, is known for fusing the country’s rich cultural heritage with modern fashion. Their clothing line features traditional designs and patterns, often inspired by folk art and embroidery. The process of creating these pieces is meticulous, involving multiple stages from design to production.
The Easter clothing drop by Gunia will include several items in off-white with black embroidery, a minimalist color scheme that the brand tends to favor. One piece of clothing goes through 14 stages before it reaches the shelves, passing through designers, craftswomen, machine embroidery specialists, tailors, seamstresses, and quality control specialists.
The most challenging part of creating these clothing items is the embroidery process, which requires a high level of technical complexity. The head of Gunia’s clothing atelier, Iryna Fedorenko, explains that finding the right combination of threads and fabric can be particularly difficult, as they need to “befriend” each other.
Some pieces are completely hand-embroidered, while others use machine embroidery. Once the embroidered sleeves are created, they’re sent to seamstresses who attach them to the body of the shirt. Then, tailors ensure that every detail is perfect, from buttons to hems.
Gunia’s approach to fashion combines traditional techniques with modern styles, creating a unique Ukrainian standard. The brand partners with Spend With Ukraine, an initiative that supports local businesses and helps preserve traditions while promoting creative innovation.
