The leaders also discussed security guarantees for Ukraine, including Canada’s commitment to providing economic support after the war ends.

Carney and Zelensky talked about defense cooperation and the possibility of joint production of long-range weapons and electronic warfare equipment. They also discussed imposing new sanctions against Russia.

Canada recently participated in a virtual summit convened by U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer. After the conference, Carney said Canada supports an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. He called on Russia to stop its attacks and come to the negotiating table.

Carney said his country remains “Ukraine’s steadfast ally” and is committed to lending Kyiv “the military support it needs to defend itself — now and into the future.”
