EU Members Pledge Aid to Ukraine

European leaders met in Brussels on March 6. They discussed ways to help Ukraine, which is in a difficult position with the US changing its foreign policy.

Ukraine’s President Volodmyr Zelensky attended the meeting. The EU Council President, Antonio Costa, said that some members have promised up to 15 billion euros (around $16.3 billion) in extra aid.

This aid will be provided through a “coalition of the willing.” This means that countries can give support even if it’s not approved by all EU leaders. Top officials thought this was necessary because Hungary’s leader, Viktor Orban, might block any EU-wide aid package.

The summit agreed on a new defense plan. It aims to raise up to 800 billion euros (around $867 billion) through loans and relaxing spending rules for governments.

Costa said that some countries have already promised support worth 15 billion euros. He asked the Council to quickly find ways to meet Ukraine’s urgent military needs.

The EU leaders were unanimous in their agreement on a new defense initiative. They showed that they are willing to rise to the challenge of helping Ukraine, which is facing difficulties with the US changing its foreign policy.
