The case against European Rearmament

**Europe’s Weakness**

For years, European leaders have focused on strengthening the continent by rearming. But is this the right approach? Not according to some experts.

**The Problem with Rearmament**

Reinducing Ukraine into NATO after Russia’s invasion three years ago was seen as a way to strengthen Europe. However, this aim has become unfeasible due to several reasons. Russia’s war economy has helped its regime, while US President Joe Biden was unwilling to push for Ukraine’s NATO membership. There was also strong opposition in the US to sending NATO troops to fight alongside Ukrainians.

**A Breathtaking Hypocrisy**

European leaders have been quick to label Russian President Vladimir Putin as a new Hitler. However, they have not followed through with actions to support this claim. Instead of committing to fighting alongside Ukrainians, they have sent weapons to help the country defeat Russia on its own.

**The Need for Institutional Reform**

So what is wrong with Europe? The continent lacks a proper Treasury, equivalent to the US State Department, and a Parliament with the power to dismiss the European Council. These gaps in institutional architecture need to be addressed.

**A Peace Now Process**

Instead of rearmament, Europe should focus on a multi-pronged Peace Now process. This includes rejecting Trump’s effort to grab Ukraine’s natural resources, negotiating with Russia, proposing a demilitarized zone, and opening negotiations with China.

**The Way Forward**

Strengthening Europe requires more than just rearmament. It needs institutional reform and a commitment to forging a democratic union. By following this approach, Europe can rebuild what is left of Ukraine once Putin is finished with it.
