**Serbian Politics in Flux**
Tonino Picula, the European Parliament’s standing rapporteur for Serbia, has expressed uncertainty about the direction of the country’s political process. He made these comments during a recent visit to Belgrade and Novi Sad.
According to Picula, the European Parliament is actively debating developments in Serbia. Meanwhile, the European Commission and Council are keeping a close eye on events across the Atlantic.
**Serbia’s Political Crisis**
Picula noted that Serbia’s current three-month-long political crisis has affected the operation of the National Parliament. Protests and obstruction in parliament are not uncommon, but physical threats against MPs are unacceptable. He observed that the mass civic movement in Serbia is gaining support from the local population.
**EU’s Role**
The rapporteur emphasized that the European Union faces pressure not only from Russia but also from a hostile US administration trying to delegitimize the EU. He noted that the EU lacks political capacity for more serious engagement in the Western Balkans and, specifically, in Serbia.
**Serbian People Hold Key**
Picula stressed that the Serbian people are the only ones who can decide on the kind of government they will have. The EU retains the right to assess whether that government meets necessary standards for progress in the accession process.
**EU Not Satisfied with Situation**
For now, Picula stated that the EU, the Council, and the Parliament are not satisfied with the situation in Serbia.
