**EU Considers Alternatives to Starlink for Ukraine**

The European Commission is looking into ways to help Ukraine get satellite communications if it can’t use the Starlink network. This comes after reports that the US threatened to cut off access to Starlink unless Ukraine agreed to a deal on critical mineral resources.

**Starlink’s Importance in Ukraine**

Ukraine has been using Starlink for its battlefield communications, with around 42,000 terminals providing service to the military, medical facilities, businesses, and aid organizations. The network has played a vital role in Ukraine’s war effort.

**Alternative Options**

The EU is considering alternative satellite options for Ukraine, including Govsatcom and IRIS. These networks are designed for government use, but could be used as a temporary solution while IRIS is being developed. Ukraine had shown interest in these alternatives before the US threat to cut off Starlink access.

**EU Action**

Member of the European Parliament Christophe Grudler urged the EU to assess alternative satellite solutions and expedite Govsatcom deployment this year by skipping certification process. This would provide a temporary solution while IRIS is being developed.
