**German Envoy Shows Support for Serbian NGOs**

The German government’s Western Balkans envoy, Manuel Sarrazin, is in Belgrade to show support for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that were raided by police earlier this week.

Sarrazin wrote on social media that he was in the city “to express solidarity with civil society in Serbia after questionable actions by police against NGOs”. He shared a picture of himself with other diplomats, including the European Union Ambassador and officials from several NGOs.

**Solidarity with NGOs**

Sarrazin’s post expressed his pride in seeing the international community standing united. More than 500 members of the Serbian academic community have signed a declaration of support for the NGOs that were raided by police.

The raids took place under orders from prosecutors investigating alleged misuse of funds from the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Four NGOs received USAID funding and were targeted in the raids.

**International Support**

Sarrazin’s visit is part of an international show of support for the NGOs. The move follows criticism from human rights groups and others who have condemned the police raids as an attack on civil society.
