**Georgian Parliament Introduces US Law with Exact Translation**
The Georgian Parliament has introduced the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), a law from the United States. The goal is to have the same law, with the same sanctions and penalties, as in the US.
“This is an exact translation,” said Archil Gorduladze, Chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee. “If anyone has concerns about the translation, we are here to listen.”
Gorduladze explained that the law was translated word-for-word from English to Georgian. Even phrases like ‘U.S. President’ and ‘Department Head’ were kept as is, to avoid any confusion.
**Concerns Over Translation**
However, officials in the Parliament have expressed concerns over the translation. Alexander Tabatadze, Head of the Parliamentary Legal Department, said that the law contains legal and substantive inaccuracies.
Tabatadze noted that the state agencies responsible for enforcing the law in the US are not compatible with Georgian reality. He also pointed out that the law only includes one amendment to the Criminal Code, while other legislative acts are missing.
**Further Discussion Needed**
The Foreign Agents Registration Act has been sent to the Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee for further discussion. Tabatadze emphasized that additional determinations will be needed regarding which agencies will be responsible for enforcing this law in Georgia.
