Opposition Councilors Not Allowed into Novi Sad City Assembly

The city police and the speaker of the Novi Sad City Assembly are denying that opposition councilors were not allowed into the building on Monday. They claimed that the opposition was called to enter, but refused.

Opposition councilors said they tried repeatedly to get in for a meeting to elect a new mayor. But they were stopped by police at the entrance. A video from outside the assembly showed them arguing with a police officer who wouldn’t let them pass.

Speaker Dina Vucinic said that what the opposition claimed was not true. She said they were called into the building, but didn’t respond to those calls. The commander of the police also allegedly called them in. Vucinic is a member of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

The Novi Sad city police department also denied that opposition councilors were blocked from entering the assembly.
