British Doctor Wins Humanitarian Medal

A doctor from Greater Manchester has been awarded a top honor for his work in Gaza. Dr Matthew Newport, an anaesthetist, received the Humanitarian Medal of the King.

The medal is given to people who have helped others during or after a crisis. It was introduced last year and is a big deal. Dr Newport got it on Tuesday at Buckingham Palace along with 13 other people.

Dr Newport said he felt proud and honored to get the award. He has gone to Gaza five times in the past year to help provide medical care. The conditions there are very tough, with many people suffering from serious health problems like diabetes and cancer.

Dr Newport said that medics in Gaza have to deal with all kinds of medical issues, not just injuries caused by bombs and fighting. They also have to treat problems like malnutrition and diarrhea that can spread quickly in crowded areas.

He gave credit to the local doctors who work hard every day in difficult conditions. Dr Newport’s award is a recognition of their efforts as well.

Other people who got the medal include Alessandra Morrell, a research midwife who helped after a big storm in Libya, and Paula Tobin, a former British Army nurse who worked at a hospital in Gaza.
