The latest flurry of peace initiatives comes just before the Munich Security Conference. This meeting was held near where Adolf Hitler convinced Britain and France to strip Czechoslovakia of its Sudetenland in 1938. Just like then, the cause of conflict is being blamed on a smaller country.
**Lesson from History**
In 1938, Britain and France failed to understand that appeasing Hitler would not bring peace. They thought they could negotiate with him and avoid war. But this approach only led to more conflicts.
**France and U.K. Can Offer Alternative Solution**
Today, France and the United Kingdom have the means of deterrence that can offer a way out for Ukraine. By supplying nuclear weapons to Ukraine or other vulnerable targets, these countries can show how multilateralism can work in a world where old certainties are disappearing.
