President Attacked with Eggs at Tbilisi Airport
This morning, February 18, President Salome Zurabishvili was reportedly pelted with eggs by people who allegedly work for the government. The attack happened as she arrived back in Georgia from a conference in Munich.
Similar incidents happened yesterday to opposition leader Giorgi Gakharia and his party member Elguja Khokrishvili. They were also egged at the airport, and their attackers released video footage of the incident on the internet.
Police were present at the airport but did not get involved in either of these incidents. The government is trying to say that the attacks are because citizens are angry with the President and Mr. Gakharia.
However, many people have been protesting against the government’s policies both inside and outside Georgia. They are upset about the country’s foreign policy and what they see as unfair treatment by the government.
One official from the ruling party said that the President “betrayed” the country and is trying to harm it. This is not true, but it shows how the government is trying to justify its actions.
A US representative has spoken out against these attacks, calling for sanctions and fair elections in Georgia.
