**No Joint European Army to Counter Russian Aggression**
Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that there will be no joint European Union army to counter Russian aggression. This is despite a call from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for Europe to create a unified army.
**Zelensky Calls for Unified Army**
On February 15, Zelensky spoke at the Munich Security Conference and asked Europe to create a unified army to counter Russian aggression in Ukraine and Europe. He said that many leaders have talked about creating an “army of Europe” and that it’s time has come.
**Sikorski Responds**
In response to Zelensky’s call, Sikorski said that the term “unified European armed forces” can mean different things to people. He stated that if it means unifying national armies, it will not happen. However, he did say that he advocates for Europe to develop its own defense capabilities.
**Ukraine Hopes for European Support**
Zelensky’s proposal came as the US has been reducing its military support for Ukraine and Europe. Ukraine hopes that Europe can fill the gap in its fight against Russia. Sikorski acknowledged that there is a need to expand European militaries.
**Poland Stands Firm**
Sikorski also stated that Poland will not put troops on the ground in Ukraine. He said that Poland’s duty as part of NATO is to protect its own territory, which lies on the eastern flank.
