Elon Musk Calls for Shutting Down US-Funded Media Outlets
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has called for shutting down two US-funded media outlets, Radio Free Europe and Voice of America. He made the comments on February 9.
Musk wrote on social media platform X that these outlets should be shut down because nobody listens to them anymore. He claimed they only promote “radical left crazy people” talking to themselves while wasting $1 billion of taxpayer money each year.
Richard Grenell, a US Special Presidential Envoy for Special Missions, made similar comments earlier this month. He said that Radio Free Europe and Voice of America are state-owned media outlets filled with far-left activists. Grenell claimed they are a relic of the past and that the government should not be funding them.
Both Musk and Grenell have voiced strong opposition to government funding of media organizations. They believe taxpayer money should not be used to support these outlets.
As head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk has been critical of federal payments to media organizations like Politico, the Associated Press, and The New York Times. He believes this funding is an inefficient use of taxpayer funds and wants to eliminate it.
Grenell, who served as Trump’s special mission envoy, has also condemned government spending on media subscriptions. He agrees with Musk that such funding should be terminated immediately.
This controversy comes amid broader scrutiny and debate surrounding government-funded media. The Trump administration took steps to halt subscriptions to outlets like Politico last year.
