Georgian Parliament Speaker Speaks Out

The Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, has spoken out against criticism from European leaders. He says it is unfair to criticize Georgia without acknowledging its own mistakes.

Papuashvili made his comments in response to a joint statement by the EU High Representative, Kaja Kallas, and the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Mart Kossi. They said that Georgia’s government was moving away from democratic standards.

In their statement, Kallas and Kossi expressed concern about changes to Georgian laws. They believe these changes will hurt freedom of expression, assembly, and media freedom. They also think Georgia is regressing in terms of democracy.

Papuashvili says it is hypocritical for European leaders to criticize Georgia without first acknowledging their own mistakes. He says they should look at their own record on issues like election reports and finances.

European leaders are calling on the Georgian government to stop making changes to laws, calm tensions, and wait for an assessment from a human rights group called ODIHR. They also want the Georgian authorities to release journalists and activists who have been wrongly imprisoned.
