Serbia in Crisis: EU Official Speaks Out

The European Parliament’s rapporteur for Serbia, Tonino Picula, says the country is in a state of emergency. He believes President Aleksandar Vucic has not found a way to address the protesters’ discontent.

Protests have been going on for some time, with students and citizens demanding change. However, their demands are not clear and need to be articulated politically, according to Picula.

The president is considering forming a new government or dissolving Parliament and holding new elections. But this may not solve anything unless there’s social consensus among the people.

Picula expressed concerns about the situation in Serbia. He said that President Vucic has avoided showing complete documentation on the reconstruction of a train station, which the students are demanding.

He also suspects that attacks on demonstrators might have been directed by the government. This is because thugs who harmed a female student came from the ruling party’s offices.

The EU is waiting to see how things unfold in Serbia. However, Picula says some EU countries have “lucrative deals” with President Vucic’s regime, which makes it difficult for the EU to take action. He’s not confident that Serbia can move forward with its EU accession talks at this time.
